## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON JULY 3, 1997, DELTA FLIGHT 1668, A BOEING 757 MADE AN UNSCHEDULED LANDING AT ONTARIO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WITH THE #2 ENGINE SHUT DOWN. IN FLIGHT, THE AIRCRAFT'S N1 COMPRESSOR DROPPED OFF 9 PERCENT, EGT NEVER OVERTEMPED, AND THE ENGINE DID NOT OVERSPEED. IN ADDITION, THE ENGINE WAS FODDED OUT, HOWEVER, NO BLADES WERE SHREDDED, BUT METAL WAS FOUND IN THE ENGINE TAILPIPE. PRATT AND WHITNEY WERE AVAILABLE FOR ENGINE TEAR-DOWN. THEIR INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE #2 ENGINE'S 6 STAGE BLADE RUTT HAD FAILED. THE PROBABLE CAUSE FOR THIS FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED. PRATT AND WHITNEY REPRESENTATIVES ARE STILL INVESTIGATING THIS MATTER. THIS INCIDENT IS CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
