## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 9, 1997, AT APPROXIMATELY 0840 EST, A BOEING 727, REGISTERED TO FIRST SECURITY BANK, NA, TRUSTEE, OPERATED BY AMERICAN TRANS AIR (AMTA), WHILE PARKED AT A GATE AT THE INDIANAPOLIS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, INDIANAPOLIS INDIANA, WAS REPORTED TO HAVE A RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR TRUNNION BROKEN. MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL FROM AMERICAN TRANS AIR, VERIFIED THAT THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR WAS SHEARED AT THE AFT SUPPORT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS THEN TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE. THIS INCIDENT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE FAA AND THE NTSB.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI97IA205](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI97IA205), Jul 9, 1997: Boeing B-727-200 (N770AT), Indianapolis, IN, incident, minor damage. Probable cause: the improper installation of the incorrect spherical bearing by the company's maintenance personnel. A factor was the improper plating of the trunnion with chromium by the landing gear overhaul…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
