## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRCRAFT ENCOUNTERED STRONG WINDS ON LANDING AND FLIPPED OVER. (.4)THE PILOT WAS CONDUCTING FLOATPLANE OPERATION ON A LAKE. WHEN HE FOUND HIMSELF FAST AND HIGH ON APPROACH TO A SMALL AREA ON THE LAKE, HE CONFIGURED THE AIRPLANE WITH 40 DEGREES OF FLAP. THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN FLAT AND HARD, AND WAS HEADED FOR AN OBSTRUCTION IN THE WATER. THE PILOT'S FOCUS WAS ON THE OBSTRUCTION IN THE WATER AND HE DID NOT APPLY ENOUGH BACK PRESSURE TO THE YOKE. WHEN THE PILOT ADDED RIGHT RUDDER TO AVOID THE OBSTRUCTION, THE AIRPLANE'S LEFT FLOAT SUBMERGED AND THE LEFT WING IMPACTED THE WATER. THE AIRPLANE THEN NOSED OVER AND CAME TO REST INVERTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC97LA153](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC97LA153), Jul 25, 1997: Cessna 185 (N8717Z), Norway, ME, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain control of the airplane while maneuvering to avoid an obstacle.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
