NARRATIVE: STUDENT PILOT (JEFFERY SCHNEIDER) DEPARTED FROM (VIH) VICHI, MO HEADED TO JEF (JEFFERSON CITY, MO) ON A SOLO TRIP (CROSS COUNTRY) ORIGINATING FROM SUS (SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS AIRPORT). ENGINE FAILED IN-FLIGHT. STUDENT NOTICED A BURNING SMELL THEN LANDED THE AIRCRAFT IN A FARMER'S FIELD NEAR VIENNA, MO. INVESTIGATION BY THE FAA ON 09/02/97 REVEALED THE LH MUFFLER (P/N:0450400-3) AFT END CAP WAS MISSING. HOT EXHAUST GASES BURNED THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS ON THE LH SIDE OF THE ENGINE FIREWALL, SHORTING THE ENGINE WIRING WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO LOSE POWER.
