## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

HARD LANDED. PASSENGER FELL TWISTED AND BROKE AN ANKLE. (-23) ON OCTOBER 10, 1997, APPROXIMATELY 0900 MOUNTAIN DAYLIGHT TIME, AN AEROSTAR S-60A HOT AIR BALLOON, N7154E, SUSTAINED NO DAMAGE DURING LANDING AT ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO. THE COMMERCIAL PILOT AND ONE PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED, BUT ANOTHER PASSENGER SUSTAINED A SERIOUS INJURY. THE PILOT GAVE HIS PASSENGERS A PREFLIGHT BRIEFING THAT INCLUDED THE POSITIONS TO ASSUME DURING LANDING. AFTER FLYING ABOUT 30 MINUTES, A LANDING APPROACH WAS INITIATED. THE PILOT INSTRUCTED THE PASSENGERS TO ASSUME THE LANDING POSITION. THE PILOT SAID A NORMAL LANDING WAS MADE AND UPON TOUCHDOWN, ONE PASSENGER FELL TO A SQUATTING POSITION AND HER FOOT WAS LATERALLY ROTATED, RESULTING IN A FRACTURE OF HER ANKLE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW98LA010](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW98LA010), Oct 10, 1997: Aerostar S-60A (N7154E), Albuquerque, NM, no damage. Probable cause: The passenger failing to follow the pilot's instructions as to the proper brace position to assume for landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
