## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-16) THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A POWER POLE APPROX 400' FROM THE END OF RUNWAY 25 AND IMPACTED THE GROUND APPROX 200' FROM THE SAID POWER POLE IN-LINE WITHTHE RUNWAY. A QUESTION OF AIRMAN'S COMPETENCY IS RAISED DUE TO THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE: THE PILOT, MR. DAN WARFIELD WAS 65 YEARS OLD, A DELAY IN HIS REACTION TIME DUE TO HIS AGE MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT. MR. WARFIELD HAD 23.4 HOURS OF DUAL BEFORE HIS FIRST SOLO. THIS IS WELL ABOVE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. THIS MAY BE AN INDICATION OF POOR RETENTION. MR. WARFIELD HAD ONLY 6.6 HOURS OF SOLO TIME AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT AND HADN'T FLOWN FOR 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA98LA009](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA98LA009), Oct 27, 1997: Piper PA-28-180 (N9332J), Midvale, ID, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain adequate clearance with the pole. A factor contributing to the accident was the pole.
