## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON DECEMBER 4, 1997, AT 0921 EDT, A BOEING B727-227, N767AT, REGISTERED TO FIRST SECURITY BANK OF UTAH, AND OPERATED BY AMERICAN TRANS AIR, INC., DEPARTED MIDWAY AIRPORT, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (MDW) TO SOUTHWEST FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, FORT MYERS, FLORIDA (RSW). DURING CRUISE, (AT 28,000 FEET) THE HYDRAULIC QUANTITY ON SYSTEM "A" DROPPED TO SLIGHTLY BELOW 1 GALLON. THE PILOT DIVERTED THE AIRCRAFT TO INDIANAPOLIS INDIANA (IND) AND LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME AND AN IFR FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL FOUND THE NUMBER 2 ENGINE DRIVEN HYDRAULIC CASE DRAIN FILTER BACK UP RING NOT SEATED PROPERLY, CAUSING THE HYDRAULIC LOSS. THE O-RINGS AND BACK UP RINGS WERE REPLACED PER INSTRUCTIONS IN THE MAINTENANCE MANUAL AND NO LEAKS WERE NOTED DURING THE TEST. THIS INCIDENT IS CONSIDERED CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
