## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF AT 0645 WITH A STUDENT. AND FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR. AFTER 45 MINS. THE STUDENT SELECTED LEFT FUEL TANK. THE VALVE EITHER ROTATED PAST DETENT OR WAS NOT COMPLETELY IN THE SELECTED FUEL TANK. A/C RAN OUT OF FUEL & THE INSTRUCTOR ELECTED TO LAND IN AN OPEN FIELD. NO DAMAGE TO AIRCRAFT. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. I ASKED THE POI TO DISCUSS THIS INCIDENT WITH THE CHIEF FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR AS WELL AS THE PIC AND DETERMINE IF ANY FURTHER ACTION WAS NEEDED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
