## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON JANUARY 23, 1998, MR. PETER CARLSON DEPARTED ALAMOGORDO AIRPORT, NM IN A RENTED AIRCRAFT, MOONEY N9744M. SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF, DURING ENROUTE CLIMB, THE ENGINE GOT VERY ROUGH. MR. CARLSON DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WITH HOLLOMAN APPROACH, TURNED BACK TOWARD THE AIRPORT, AND FOLLOWED TROUBLE SHOOTING PROCEDURES. DURING THE MAGNETO CHECK THE RIGHT MAGNETO RAN THE ENGINE NORMALLY, BUT ON THE LEFT MAGNETO POWER WAS REDUCED TO NIL. MR. CARLSON RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT UNDER PARTIAL POWER. HE STATED THAT DURING PRE-TAKEOFF MAGNETO CHECK EVERYTHING APPEARED NORMAL.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
