## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

LOST DIRECTIOANL CONTROL LANDING IN MODERATE CROSSWIND. GROUND LOOPED. FAILED USE PROPER CROSSWIND PROCEDURES. (-23) ON 31 JANUARY, 1998, AT APPROXIMATELY 12:00 EASTERN STANDARD TIME, MR. PHILIPPE LE SCAO WHILE PILOTING A PIPER, PA-18-150, N5975Z MADE AN X-WIND LANDING ON RUNWAY 29 TO NEW SMYRNA BEACH MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (EVB). DURING THE ROLL OUT PHASE, THE TAIL WHEEL TOUCH DOWN ON THE RUNWAY CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO VEER RIGHT DUE TO THE RIGHT RUDDER REQUIRED TO COMPENSATE FOR THE RIGHT QUARTERING X-WIND. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED A GO AROUND BY APPLYING FULL POWER AND LEFT RUDDER. THE AIRCRAFT TURNED QUICKLY TO THE LEFT OFF OF THE RUNWAY TOWARDS A LARGE TREE AND DRAINAGE DITCH. THE PILOT MADE THE DECISION TO APPLY FULL LEFT RUDDER TO AVOID THE TREE CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO GROUND LOOP. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING AND A BROKEN RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR WAS THE RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO THE PILOT OR PASSENGER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA98LA071](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA98LA071), Jan 31, 1998: Piper PA-18-150 (N5975Z), New Smyrna Bch, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: failure of the pilot to maintain directional control of the airplane during the landing roll, which resulted in an inadvertent ground swerve.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
