## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON FEB. 21, 1998 AMERICAN EAGLE FLIGHT 4897 WAS ENROUTE FROM JFK TO SYR. THE CAPTAIN RECEIVED AN AVIONICS RACK SMOKE DETECTION WARNING LIGHT. THERE WAS NO SIGN OF SMOKE OR FIRE IN THE COCKPIT. THE FLIGHT LANDED IN SYR WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. MAINTENANCE (EXEC AIR) DETERMINED THAT IT WAS JUST AN INDICATION PROBLEM AFTER POWERING UP THE SYSTEM AND WATCHING FOR SMOKE/FIRE. THE AVIONICS RACK SMOKE DETECTION SYSTEM WAS MEL'D (26-3) UNDER AUTH. #020148M. THE AIRCRAFT WAS REPAIRED WITH NEW SMOKE DETECTION SYSTEM IN MCO THAT NIGHT. THIS INCIDENT IS CONSIDERED CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
