## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

COLLIDED IN MIDAIR WITH N38NL ANOTHER SONERAI HOMEBUILT. BOTH FELL OUT OF CONTROL AND FATAL IMPACTS. (.4)A WITNESS ON THE GROUND OBSERVED THE TWO AIRPLANES APPROACHING HIS FARM FROM THE NORTHEAST. HE SAID THAT THE TWO AIRPLANES WERE JUST ABOUT OVERHEAD WHEN THE AIRPLANE ON THE RIGHT [NORTH], THE ONE SLIGHTLY AFT OF THE OTHER AIRPLANE, DRIFTED INTO THE OTHER AIRPLANE. THE WITNESS SAID THAT HE HEARD A 'POP,' AND THEN WATCHED THE AIRPLANES COME DOWN. THE WITNESS LOST SIGHT OF BOTH AIRPLANES AS THEY WENT BEHIND A LINE OF TREES RUNNING ALONG THE SOUTH SIDE OF HIS FARMHOUSE. EXAMINATION OF THE WRECKAGE REVEALED NO ANOMALIES. (-23) TWO AIRCRAFT COLLIDED DURING CRUISE FLIGHT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI98FA096](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI98FA096), Feb 22, 1998: Stanek Sonerai II LTS (N43804), Malta, IL, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failed to maintain adequate clearance from the other aircraft.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
