## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: THE AIRCRAFT WAS ENROUTE FROM ORANGE CITY, IA TO FOREST CITY, IA WHEN THE PILOT SMELLED AND SAW SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT AND NOTICED OIL ON THE WINDSHIELD. THE PILOT MADE A PRECAUTIONARY OFF-AIRPORT LANDING. THE MECHANIC THAT INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT AND REPAIRED THE ENGINE AFTER THE LANDING, FOUND THE CRANKSHAFT SEAL HAD BLOWN OUT. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT HE BELIEVED ENGINE CRANKCASE PRESSURES HAD BUILT UP BECAUSE THE BREATHER WAS OBSTRUCTED BY FROZEN CONDENSATION. A MALFUNCTION OR DEFECT REPORT HAS BEEN REQUESTED FROM THE MECHANIC.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
