## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: PILOT DEPARTED DES MOINES, IOWA TO DO SOME TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS. ON THE FIRST TAKEOFF, THE PILOT RAISED THE LANDING GEAR AND SMOKE FILLED THE COCKPIT. HE TOLD THE TOWER OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY CLEARED HIM TO LAND AT ANY RUNWAY. THE PILOT MOVED THE LANDING GEAR HANDLE TO THE DOWN POSITION AND NOTICED THAT THE NOSE LANDING GEAR DID NOT INDICATE DOWN AND LOCKED. HE ATTEMPTED TO RECYCLE THE LANDING GEAR AND ASKED THE TOWER IF HIS NOSE LANDING GEAR WAS EXTENDED. THE TOWER TOLD THE PILOT THAT HIS NOSE LANDING GEAR APPEARED TO BE DOWN. PILOT MADE A NORMAL LANDING AND THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED ON ROLL OUT. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE MOTOR THAT DRIVES THE HYDRAULIC PUMP WAS RECEIVING 28 VOLTS DC, BUT THE MOTOR WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. WHEN REPAIRS ARE COMPLETED M & D REPORT WILL BE PROCESSED. THIS MATTER IS CONSIDERED CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
