## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

NARRATIVE: ON MARCH 23, 1998, MR. JONATHAN T. WARD, A COMMERCIAL PILOT, CERTIFICATE NUMBER 287684122, LANDED AT OHIO UNIVERSITY AIRPORT (UNI) AT 1525 EDT IN A PA-34-200T, N2900B, SERIAL NUMBER 34-7970338. AFTER LANDING ON RUNWAY 25, MR. WARD SAID THAT THE LEFT BRAKE BECAME SPONGY. THE FIRST TAXIWAY WAS BYPASSED SO THE AIRCRAFT COULD CONTINUE TO SLOW. APPROACHING THE END OF THE RUNWAY, MR. WARD STATED THERE WAS NO LEFT BRAKE. MR. WARD ATTEMPTED TO USE DIFFERENTIAL POWER TO MAKE THE LAST TAXIWAY, WHICH REQUIRES A LEFT TURN. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE TAXIWAY TO THE RIGHT AND THE RIGHT PROPELLER STRUCK A RUNWAY IDENTIFIER LIGHT. DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO THE RIGHT PROPELLER AND RUNWAY IDENTIFIER LIGHT. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF N2900B ON MARCH 24, 1998, BY ASI JAY C. WILKINS OF THE COLUMBUS FSDO, CONCLUDED THAT AIR WAS TRAPPED IN THE PILOT'S SIDE, LEFT BRAKE LINE, CAUSING THE LOSS OF BRAKE EFFECTIVENESS. HARRY MCCUTCHEON, DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE FOR OHIO UNIVERSITY, BLED THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND RE-SERVICED IT. A FUNCTIONAL CHECK OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS SATISFACTORY. THE RIGHT PROPELLER WAS REPLACED AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO SERVICE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
