## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

APPROACHING MOORING MAST 30KT WIND GUST BLEW BLIMP INTO TREES. TORE BAG LANDED HARD COLLAPSED RIGHT LANDING GEAR. (.4) THE PILOT EXPECTED THE WINDS TO BE FROM THE SOUTH AT 12 TO 17 KNOTS. WHILE APPROACHING THE GROUND BASED MAST FOR MOORING FROM THE NORTH, WITH THE GROUNDCREW IN CONTROL OF THE BLIMP, A GUST OF WIND FROM THE RIGHT, ESTIMATED TO BE AT ABOUT 30 KNOTS, ACTED ON THE BLIMP BLOWING IT TOWARD TREES TO THE EAST. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO REGAIN CONTROL AND AVOID THE TREES BY ADDING FULL ENGINE POWER. THIS WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AND THE BLIMP CONTACTED THE TREES AND THE AIR BAG WAS TORN OPEN. THE GONDOLA DESCENDED AND LANDED HARD CAUSING THE RIGHT LANDING GEAR TO COLLAPSE. (-23) SEE NARRATIVE #MIA98LA134

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA98LA134](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA98LA134), Apr 16, 1998: American Blimp A-1-50 (N151LG), Quincy, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot-in-command's and groundcrew chief's failure to properly evaluate wind conditions prior to attempting to moor the blimp.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
