## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

VEERED OFF RUNWAY LANDING. LOST CONTROL DOWN EMBANKMENT. NOSED OVER. LIGHT GEAR TYPE TUCKS IN ON SIDE LOADS. (.4)AFTER LANDING, THE PILOT APPLIED RIGHT RUDDER TO CORRECT A GRADUAL LEFT TURNING TENDENCY. THE AIRPLANE ABRUPTLY TURNED TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT TRIED TO COMPENSATE WITH LEFT AILERON AND POWER. BY THIS TIME, THE AIRPLANE HAD LEFT THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT PULLED THE MIXTURE TO FULL LEAN. THE AIRPLANE ENCOUNTERED MUD ON THE DOWN SLOPE OF THE EMBANKMENT FLANKING THE RUNWAY, AND GENTLY NOSED OVER ONTO ITS TOP. EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE REVEALED NO ANOMALIES. (-23)UPON LANDING THE PILOT APPLIED RIGHT RUDDER TO CORRECT FOR WHAT APPEARED TO BE A LEFT TURNING TENDENCY. THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN A MORE THAN EXPECTED RIGHT TURN AND THE PILOT APPLIED LEFT AILERON TO CORRECT. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED ITS RIGHT TOTATION ANF THE PILOT THEN ADDED POWER TO TRY TO INCREASE FOWARD MOMENTUM AND ATTEMPT TO CANCEL ROTATION. THE AICRAFT CONTINUED ITS RIGHT AND OFF THE RUNWAY AT WHICH TIME THE PILOT PULLED THE THROTTLE AND MIXTURE TO IDLE. UPON LEAVING THE RUNWAY THE AICRAFT BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE AND SLID DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND NOSED OVER DAMAGING THE WINGS, VERTICAL STABILIZER, RUDDER AND PROPELLER. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THIS AIRCRAFT IS EQUIPPED WITH WHAT IS REFERREF TO AS A "LIGHT GEAR" WHICH HAS A HIGH POSITIVE ARCH TO IT. THIS DESIGN HAS BEEN KNOWN TO CAUSE THE GEAR TO TUCK IN WHEN A SIDE LOAD IS APPLIED. CESSNA HAS MADE A HEAVY GEAR ASSEMBLY AVAILABLE WHICH HAS A ZERO OR NEGATIVE ARCH TO IT AND ELIMINATES THIS PROBLEM. THE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS APPLIED BY THE PILOT DO NOT WORK WITH THE LIGHT GEAR ASSEMBLY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI98LA137](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI98LA137), Apr 29, 1998: Cessna 305 (N201FM), Fredricktown, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's failure to maintain aircraft control after landing. Factors contributing to this accident were the embankment, and the soft , muddy soil making up the embankment.
