## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

LOST POWER. LANDED ON HIGHWAY. WING STRUCK EMBANKMENT. (FROM .4) THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING ON A HIGHWAY FOLLOWING A PARTIAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. HE STATED THAT AFTER THE INITIAL POWER LOSS, HE ATTEMPTED TO DIVERT TO AN ALTERNATE AIRPORT FOR LANDING. THE AIRPLANE'S ENGINE CONTINUED TO LOSE POWER, AND THE AIRPLANE WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE. HE SELECTED A PORTION OF THE HIGHWAY AS AN EMERGENCY LANDING AREA. DURING THE LANDING ROLL, THE RIGHT WING STRUCK AN OVERHANGING TREE, AND THE AIRPLANE TURNED TO THE RIGHT AND STRUCK AN EMBANKMENT. THE AIRPLANE'S WINGS AND FUSELAGE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. A POSTACCIDENT ENGINE INSPECTION REVEALED A BROKEN INTAKE VALVE ON THE NUMBER 3 CYLINDER. (-23) PERSONAL FLIGHT TO OREGON. #2 CYLINDER IN TAKE VALVE BROKE. LOSS OF POWER. PERFORMED EMERGENCY LANDING ON ROAD. LOSS OF CONTROL OF A/C, HIT OBJECT AND CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO WINGS AND FUSELAGE.^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC98LA058](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC98LA058), May 27, 1998: Luscombe 8A (N1322B), Paxson, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to a failure of the engine's number 3 intake valve. A factor in the accident was the unsuitable terrain for a forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
