## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACFT CRASHED ON TAKEOFF, OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES ARE UNKNOWN. GREENFIELD, IA. (.4)THE PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS USING 20-DEGREES OF FLAPS FOR TAKEOFF, WHICH IS NOT THE NORMAL TAKEOFF CONFIGURATION, BECAUSE HE WAS TESTING A NEW TAKEOFF TECHNIQUE HE HAD SEEN IN AN AVIATION PUBLICATION. THE PILOTED STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT BECAME AIRBORNE, SOONER THAN EXPECTED, AND DRIFTED TO THE RIGHT OF THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE. WHILE THE AIRCRAFT WAS DRIFTING ACROSS THE RUNWAY IT IMPACTED THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 30' FROM THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE. IN A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH THE PILOT, HE STATED THAT THE ACCIDENT COULD OF BEEN AVOIDED IF HE HAD BUILT UP ADDITIONAL AIRSPEED BEFORE LIFTOFF AND AFTER LIFTOFF KEPT THE AIRCRAFT LOW IN GROUND EFFECT. (-23)AIRCRAFT DEPARTED RUNWAY 07 AT GREENFIELD, IOWA. APPROXIMATELY 5 TO 6 FEET ABOVE THE RUNWAY, THE PILOT STATE HE STALLED THE AIRCRAFT AND IMPACTED THE END OF THE RUNWAY.PILOT AND HIS SON RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES AND THE IARCRAFT WAS DEMOLISHED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI98LA186](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI98LA186), Jun 2, 1998: Sheets Kitfox II (N487JS), Greenfield, IA, destroyed. Probable cause: the initial climb airspeed not obtained/maintained after liftoff by the pilot in command. A factor was the improper compensation for wind conditions by the pilot in command.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
