## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

EXPERIMENTAL ACFT ENGINE QUIT, PILOT MADE EMERG LANDING IN A FIELD. DEER VALLEY, AZ. (-23) ON JUNE 8, 1998 I INVESTIGATED AN AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT ON A KIT FOX II S/N 1, N62KF AT MC GILL AIR PARK. THE PILOT REPORTED DURING CRUISE FLIGHT THAT HE LOST POWER AT 2500' AGL HE THEN NOSE THE AIRCRAFT OVER TO PICK UP AIRSPEED TO WINDMILL THE PROPELLER, AT THAT TIME HE REALIZED THAT THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED. HE THEN PICKED A CONSTRUCTION SIGHT TO LAND THE AIRCRAFT. (.4) THE PILOT STATED THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE FLIGHT WAS TO FLY TO A DIFFERENT AIRPORT WITH ANOTHER AIRCRAFT TO HAVE COFFEE. THE PILOT STATED THAT AFTER COMPLETING A 360-DEGREE TURN TO WAIT FOR THE OTHER AIRCRAFT, THE ENGINE CAME TO A STOP. HE CHOSE AN OPEN DIRT FIELD TO MAKE THE EMERGENCY LANDING. AFTER TOUCHDOWN THE LANDING GEAR WAS SHEARED OFF AFTER COLLIDING WITH A DIRT BERM. THE PILOT STATED THAT ALL ENGINE INSTRUMENTS WERE INDICATING NORMAL AND NO DISCREPANCIES WERE NOTED. ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER OF THE ENGINE, THIS ENGINE HAD BEEN INSTALLED ON A 1989 SKI-DOO MACH 1 SNOWMOBILE, WHICH HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE ENGINE MANUFACTURER FURTHER STATED THAT THIS PARTICULAR MODEL WAS NOT ORIGINALLY INTENDED FOR USE IN AN AIRCRAFT. THE OWNER INSPECTED THE ENGINE FOLLOWING PURCHASE AND PRIOR TO INSTALLATION IN THE AIRFRAME. NO DISCREPANCIES NOTED DURING THE PREINSTALLATION INSPECTION. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE BY THE OWNER FOLLOWING THE ACCIDENT REVEALED THAT THE ROTARY VALVE HAD BROKEN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX98LA254](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX98LA254), Jun 6, 1998: Girgen Kitfox II (N62KF), Peoria, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: An engine failure due to a broken rotary valve for unknown reasons. Contributing factors to the accident was an inadequate inspection by the owner of a previously damaged engine during maintenance…

## Other reports on N62KF (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19920429012159I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920429012159I), Apr 29, 1992: Amtrdf KITFOX (N62KF), Peoria, AZ, Minor damage. Engine quit on takeoff due to fuel starvation. Landed and departed end of runway. Forgot to turn on fuel valves.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
