## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 1998, N5083W, A CESSNA P210N, OPERATED BY MR. CARL ERNSTROM, WAS ON AN IFR FLIGHT FROM BATAVIA, NY TO BINGHAMTON, NY AT 5000 FEET AND 4 MILES OUT OF ITHACA, NY WHEN THE PILOT EXPERIENCED SMOKE IN THE CABIN. THE VENT AND EMERGENCY WINDOW WERE IMMEDIATELY OPENED AND THE SMOKE BECAME MORE INTENSE. THE FLAPS AND LANDING GEAR WERE LOWERED FOR AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN ITHACA, NY. AFTER TOUCHDOWN, THE PILOT SECURED THE ENGINE AND TURNED OFF THE MASTER SWITCH BEFORE EXITING THE AIRCRAFT ON THE ACTIVE RUNWAY. CFR RESPONDED AND NOTICED THE FIRE WAS FREE BURNING AND LOCATED JUST FORWARD OF THE SWITCH/CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE COCKPIT. THE PILOT WAS THE ONLY PERSON ON BOARD AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS MODIFIED WITH A BOB FIELDS INFLATABLE DOOR SEAL STC AND THE AIR PUMP WAS FOUND TO BE THE SOURCE OF THE FIRE. INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING TO DETERMINE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
