## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-5) AIRCRAFT DEPARTED CRQ @ 07:00 FOR PALM SPRINGS AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE PILOT STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN SHAKING AND PULLING LEFT. A DROP IN OIL PRESSURE WAS NOTED AND THE LEFT ENGINE WAS SHUT DOWN. AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED AND THE AIRCRAFT DIVERTED TO SAN FOR LANDING. LANDING WAS UNEVENTFUL. WHEN THE CREW INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT, THEY FOUND THE LEFT ENGINE COWLING DAMAGED AND THE TOP PORTION OF THE COWLING WAS MISSING. FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH THE TECHNICIAN THAT HAD JUST COMPLETED WORK OF THE LEFT ENGINE, IT WAS EXPLAINED THAT AS HE WAS INSTALLING THE TOP COWLING, HIS WORK WAS INTERRUPTED BY A TELEPHONE CALL ANNOUNCING THAT HIS CHILD HAD BEEN TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL UPON WHICH HE LEFT WORK. WHEN HE RETURNED TO COMPLETE HIS WORK, HE FAILED TO VERIFY THE PROGRESS OF THE JOB AND COMPLETED INSTALLING THE COWLING WITHOUT PUTTING THE SCREWS INTO THE TOP PORTION OF THE COWL.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
