## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.4)THE PILOT HAD LEVELED OFF IN CRUISE AND WAS LEANING THE FUEL MIXTURE WHEN THE MIXTURE CONTROL CEASED TO HAVE EFFECT. THE PILOT STATES THAT THE ENGINE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER, THEN QUIT. THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER DURING THE EMERGENCY LANDING IN TUNDRA. POSTACCIDENT INSPECTION REVEALED THE MIXTURE CONTROL CABLE HAD UNSCREWED FROM THE MIXTURE CONTROL ARM. THE CABLE HAD BEEN REPLACED 238 HOURS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, AND INSPECTED 142, AND 44 HOURS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. THE SERVICE MANUAL SPECIFIES THE JAM NUT WHICH LOCKS THE CABLE TO THE ARM BE TORQUED TO 15 +/-2 INCH-POUNDS. THERE IS NO SAFETY WIRE REQUIREMENT FOR THIS LINKAGE. IF DISCONNECTED, GRAVITY WILL ALLOW THE MIXTURE CONTROL ARM TO FALL TO IDLE-CUTOFF. (-23) ON THURSDAY, JULY 16, 1998, AT APPROXIMATELY 17:25 ADT, A CESSNA 207, N1763U, DEPARTED FROM KING SALMON AIRPORT FOR SOUTH NAKNEK AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS OPERATED BY YUTE AIR AS FLIGHT 670. ABOUT 5 MINUTES AFTER DEPARTURE THE PILOT LEANED THE ENGINE. THE MIXTURE CONTROL APPEARED TO NOT BE WORKING PROPERLY SO THE PILOT RETURNED IT TO THE FULL RICH POSITION. THE ENGINE STARTED TO RUN ROUGH AND THEN BEGAN TO LOSE POWER. THE PILOT TURNED THE A IRCRAFT BACK TOWARDS KING SALMON, BUT COULD NOT MAINTAIN ALTITUDE. THE ENGINE QUIT APPROXIMATELY 7 MILES SOUTH OF THE AIRPORT. DURING THE EMERGENCY LANDING THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN. THE NOSE LANDING GEAR, PROP, AND RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR WHEEL BROKE OFF DURING THE IMPACT. AIRCRAFT FUSELAGE, COWLING, AND FLAPS WERE DAMAGED. THE PILOT SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE MIXTURE CONTROL CABLE HAD COME LOOSE FROM THE MIXTURE CONTROL ROD END.
