## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AT APPROXIMATELY 7:15 PM ON THE EVENING OF 07/16/98, OWNER/PILOT LESLIE F. WALKER, JR, AND PASSENGER, WILLIAM TUCKER, DEPARTED FINLEY AIRSTRIP, MARION, AR, FOR THE PURPOSE OF A LOCAL PLEASURE FLIGHT. THIS WAS THE FIRST FLIGHT SINCE ACQUIRING THE AIRCRAFT THE PREVIOUS DAY. MR. WALKER'S PREVIOUS FLIGHT EXPERIENCE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH RIDING IN AN ULTRALIGHT-STYLE AIRCRAFT OWNED BY HIS COUSIN TWO YEARS AGO. THE AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF, AND MADE TWO TO THREE PASSES DOWN THE RUNWAY TO THE EAST PRIOR TO EXECUTING A DOWNWIND NORTH OF THE RUNWAY FOR LANDING ON THE WEST END OF THE AIRSTRIP. THE AIRCRAFT TURNED ONTO FINAL, ROLLING INTO A STEEP BANK AT AN ALTITUDE OF 150' TO 200', AT WHICH TIME A STALL PROBABLY OCCURRED. THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT DROPPED, AND THE AIRCRAFT DESCENDED TO THE GROUND, IMPACTING IN A COTTON FIELD .4 MILES WEST OF THE WEST END OF THE AIRSTRIP, DESTROYING THE AIRCRAFT AND SERIOUSLY INJURING BOTH OCCUPANTS. (THE ENGINE WAS NOTED TO HAVE BEEN RUNNING NORMALLY, AND WAS RUNNING ON THE GROUND AFTER THE IMPACT UNTIL IT QUIT DUE TO A DISCONNECTED FUEL LINE).

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW98LA313](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW98LA313), Jul 17, 1998: Shoemaker S-12 Aeraile (N82584), Marion, AR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The non-certificated pilot's failure to maintain minimum required airspeed resulting in an inadvertent stall. A factor was the pilot's lack of total flight experience.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
