## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHEN THE PILOT OF THE NEW, KIT-BUILT VELOCITY REALIZED HE HAD LOST THROTTLE CONTROL, HE DECIDED TO LAND HIS AIRPLANE AT THE HOME FIELD OF THE MANUFACTURER. HE SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE IN THE LANDING PATTERN, BUT MISCALCULATED THE POWER OFF DESCENT RATE, AND LANDED SHORT OF HIS INTENDED LANDING RUNWAY. (-23) PILOT STATED THAT THE THROTTLE SEEMED TO BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE WAS OPERATING AT APPROXIMATELY 2200 RPM. HE TRIED TO MAKE A LANDING USING THE MIXTURE CONTROL. DURING APPROACH HE PULLED THE MIXTURE TO DESCEND WHEN HE PUSHED IT BACK IN THE ENGINE DID NOT START AND HE LANDED IN AN AREA ABOUT 3 MILES FROM THE AIRPORT. HE WAS HOSPITALIZED WITH BACK AND RIB INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA98LA198](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA98LA198), Jul 17, 1998: Velocity Standard RG (N96HV), Sebastian, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of power control due to a disconnected throttle linkage. Also causal was the inadequate maintenance by the owner/builder.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
