## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT STATED THAT AFTER TAKING OFF FROM A 2300' PRIVATE AIRFIELD HE ENCOUNTERED A GUSH OF WIND WHICH CAUSED HIM TO CRASH INTO A SWAMP AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY. (.4) THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH 10 FOOT TALL, DENSE SWAMP REEDS, 100 FEET BEYOND THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF. THE AIRPLANE ROTATED 180 DEGREES, STRUCK TAIL FIRST AND ENDED UP INVERTED IN THE SWAMP. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, HIS AIRSPEED DURING CLIMB OUT WAS 'NORMAL' AT 70 KNOTS. HE SAID HE CLEARED THE END OF THE 2,300 FOOT LONG, GRASS RUNWAY, WHEN A GUST OF WIND (WIND SHEAR) CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO DROP ABOUT 10 TO 15 FEET. HE SAID THERE WAS NO MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION WITH THE AIRPLANE OR THE ENGINE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD98LA113](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD98LA113), Jul 29, 1998: Piper PA-28-140 (N32583), Salem, NJ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain adequate altitude/clearance from the reeds. A related factor was the wind gusts.

## Other reports on N32583 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19781111021299I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19781111021299I), Nov 11, 1978: Piper PA28140 (N32583), Huntsville, AR. Forced landing on highway after running out of fuel.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
