AS PER NTSB 09/09/98 AT 0800HRS. UP-GRADE FROM OCCURRENCE TO INCIDENT DUE TO JT8D FAILURES AND THE NTSB UTILIZING THIS INCIDENT FOR FURTHER TREND ANALYSIS. PRIOR TO THIS ACTION, IT WAS CLOSED OUT AS AN OCCURRENCE UNDER PTRS #SO179813823. (.19) ON AUGUST 5, 1998, AT 0751 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME, A MCDONNELL DOUGLAS MD-88, N912DL, EXPERIENCED A CONTAINED ENGINE FAILURE ON TAKEOFF ROLL AT FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA. THE FLIGHT WAS OPERATED BY DELTA AIR LINES, INC. UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF TITLE 14 CFR PART 121 AND VISUAL FLIGHT RULES. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED, AND A INSTRUMENT FLIGHT RULES FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE TWO AIRLINE TRANSPORT PILOTS, THREE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS, AND 142 PASSENGERS WERE NOT INJURED. THE FLIGHT WAS ORIGINATING AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. ACCORDING TO THE FAA, THE AIRPLANE HAD A CONTAINED ENGINE FAILURE IN THE LEFT ENGINE ON TAKEOFF FROM RUNWAY 9L. THE FLIGHT CREW ABORTED THE TAKEOFF AT 40 KNOTS AND SECURED THE LEFT ENGINE. THE AIRPLANE RETURNED TO THE GATE, AND THE PASSENGERS DEPLANED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
