## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON AUGUST 11, 1998, THIS INSPECTOR WAS NOTIFIED BY MR. FRANK MURPHY, OF THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA THAT AN AIRPLANE HAD CRASH LANDED APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES EAST OF HIS AGRICULTURAL OPERATIONS AIR STRIP. THE PILOT OF THE DOWNED AIRPLANE HAD GOTTEN A RIDE TO MR. MURPHY'S STRIP AND REQUESTED ASSISTANCE IN GETTING THE PILOT'S PERSONAL EFFECTS OUT OF THE FIELD. MR. MURPHY ASSISTED THE PILOT, MR. JAN BALLARD SPANGLER IN REMOVING THE PERSONAL EFFECTS FROM THE ACCIDENT SITE TO MR. MURPHY'S STRIP. MR. SPANGLER THEN LEFT TO CONTACT AN ACQUANTANCE TO PICK HIM UP. THIS OCCURRED ON MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 1998, AT APPROXIMATELY 1630 LOCAL TIME. MR. MURPHY STATED THAT HE WAS AMAZED AT THE VOLUME OF BAGGAGE THAT CAME OUT OF THE AIRPLANE, A TAYLORCRAFT BC-12D, REGISTRATION NUMBER N96175. THE TOTAL VOLUME FILLED THE BED OF HIS PICK-UP TRUCK. (NARRATIVE CONTINUED, BUT WAS OMITTED FROM ENTRY PENDING RECEIPT OF FINAL NTSB NARRATIVE).

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL98LA110](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL98LA110), Aug 10, 1998: Taylorcraft BC12-D (N96175), Thomasville, GA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's poor in-flight decision to attempt a forced landing in a field 2 miles from an airport, leading to an on-ground collision with rough terrain. A factor was the pilot's physiological need.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
