## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACFT CRASHED INTO A RESIDENTAL AREA WHILE DOING A MISSED APPROACH. (-23) ON AUGUST 15, 1998, AT 0738 EDT, A BEECH A36, N8EM, REGISTERED TO AVIATION SPECIALISTS, CINCINNATI, OHIO, CRASHED WHILE DOING A MISSED APPROACH AT CLERMONT COUNTY AIRPORT, OHIO, (I69), WHILE ON A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT. IFR CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME. AN IFR FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DEMOLISHED. THE PRIVATE PILOT WAS FATALLY INJURED. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED AT HAMILTON, OHIO (HAO) ON AUGUST 15, 1998 AT 0718 EDT. (.4) THE PILOT DEPARTED ON AN IFR FLIGHT IN INSTRUMENT METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS WITHOUT RECEIVING A WEATHER BRIEFING. WEATHER REPORTED IN THE AREA OF THE DESTINATION AIRPORT WAS CEILING 300 FEET OVERCAST WITH 1 MILE VISIBILITY IN FOG. THE INSTRUMENT APPROACH WAS FLOWN 1 MILE SOUTH OF, AND PARALLEL TO, THE DESTINATION RUNWAY. THE PILOT PERFORMED A LEFT TURN DURING THE MISSED APPROACH PROCEDURE, FOLLOWED BY A RIGHT TURN AFTER HE REQUESTED VECTORS FOR A RETURN FLIGHT TO THE DEPARTURE AIRPORT. EXAMINATION OF RADAR DATA REVEALED THAT AFTER THE AIRPLANE COMPLETED THE RIGHT TURN AND ROLLED OUT ON THE ASSIGNED HEADING, THE AIRPLANE RE-ENTERED A RIGHT TURN AND DESCENDED IN A RIGHT-HAND SPIRAL. EXAMINATION OF THE AIRFRAME AND ENGINE REVEALED NO PRE-IMPACT ANOMALIES. PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN AT THE SCENE IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE ACCIDENT SHOWED REDUCED VISIBILITY DUE TO FOG.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD98FA094](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD98FA094), Aug 15, 1998: Beech A-36 (N8EM), Amelia, OH, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: the pilot's loss of control in flight due to spatial disorientation. A related factor was the fog.

## Other reports on N8EM (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19891217051709A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19891217051709A), Dec 17, 1989: Beech A36 (N8EM), Nashville, NC, Substantial damage. Engine quit on descent to airport. Hit ditch landing in a field. No engine defects. Water in fuel on preflight.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
