## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-5)THE PIC STATED THAT A NEWLY CHECKED-OUT PILOT WAS FLYING THE AIRCRAFT. TWO TAKEOFFS WERE ABORTED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. DURING THE SECOND ABORT, THE AIRCRAFT HIT A TAXIWAY SIGN. THE PIC STATED THAT HE FELT THE PILOT FLYING WAS JUST NOT USING ENOUGH RUDDER AND POSSIBLY TOO MUCH BRAKE. THE AIRCRAFT INSPECTION BY THE PILOT SHOWED NO DAMAGE. THE PIC CONDUCTED THE THIRD TAKEOFF SUCCESSFULLY BUT HE HAD INSUFFICIENT RUDDER TRAVEL. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO HELENA AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. AN INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT AND RECORDS WAS COMPLETED. IT REVEALED THE RIGHT RUDDER CABLE DISCONNECTED FROM THE RUDDER BELLCRANK. THIS WAS CAUSED BY THE CASTELLATED NUT COMING LOOSE FROM THE RUDDER CABLE ATTACH BOLT (AN310-3) AT THE RUDDER BELLCRANK. DURING THE INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT THE CASTELLATED NUT AND COTTER PIN WERE NOT FOUND. THE INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT RECORDS FAILED TO SHOW ANY EVIDENCE OF MAINTENANCE BEING PERFORMED IN THAT AREA IN THE PAST 10 YEARS. MAINTENANCE REPLACED ALL (4) RUDDER CLEVIS BOLTS AND CASTLE NUTS ON 8/20/98 AT AIRCRAFT TOTAL TIME OF 8561 HOURS.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
