## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 30, 1998 AT 8:35 PM (04:35 UTC) THE CREW OF CACTUS 481 WAS ATTEMPTING TO CIRCUMVENT THUNDERSTORM IN THEIR FLIGHT PATH. A REQUEST BY THE CREW TO DEVIATE NORTH OF HECTOR VOR WAS DENIED DUE TO CONFLICTING TRAFFIC PREVENTING A HIGH ALTITUDE FOR CACTUS 481. ACCORDING TO THE ATC TAPE, THE CREW COMPLIED WITH AN ATC INSTRUCTION FOR A FIVE (5) DEGREE CHANGE OF COURSE TO AVOID RESTRICTED AREA R-2501N. WHEN INSTRUCTED TO MAKE AND ADDITIONAL CORRECTION TO THE LEFT THE CREW ADVISED ATC THAT THEY COULD NOT COMPLY DUE TO HEAVY CLOUD BUILDUPS IN THE INTENDED FLIGHT PATH. THE CREW WAS INSTRUCTED TO START A RIGHT TURN TO 290 DEGREES. THE CREW SLOWED TO 250 KNOTS INDICATED AND INITIATED A 30 DEGREE BANK TURN, BUT THE RADIUS OF THE TURN AND THE ATTEMPT TO AVOID THE THUNDERSTORMS RESULTED IN INADVERTENTLY ENTERING THE EDGE OF R-2501N. THERE WAS NO LOSS OF SEPARATION OR CONFLICT WITH OTHER KNOWN TRAFFIC. NO OPERATIONS WERE DETECTED IN THE RESTRICTED AREA AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. NO PILOT DEVIATION WAS FILED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
