## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 30, 1998 AT 4:00PM, DST, A PIPER J3-C65 DEPARTED CLOW AIRPORT, PLAINFIELD, IL ON A TEST FLIGHT TO "BREAK-IN" IN NEWLY OVERHAULED ENGINE. ON DESCENT TO LANDING, CARBURETOR HEAT WAS APPLIED. AN EXCESSIVELY RICH MIXTURE WAS ENCOUNTERED. THE CARBURETOR DOES NOT HAVE A REMOTE MIXTURE CONTROL. THE ENGINE QUIT BEFORE THE CARBURETOR HEAT COULD BE TURNED OFF. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED IN A FIELD APPROX. 1/2 MILE FROM THE SOUTH END OF CLOW AIRPORT. NO DAMAGE OR FIRE TO THE AIRCRAFT. NO INJURIES TO THE COMMERCIALLY RATED PILOT. NOTHING FOLLOWS.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
