## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT LOST NUMBER TWO ENGINE AFTER TAKE OFF AND RETURNED TO LAND ON RUNWAY 22R AT JFK AIRPORT. DURING ROLL OUT THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR COLLAPSED CAUSING THE GEAR TO SEPARATE FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR WAS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 1000 YDS SOUTH OF THE INTERSECTION OF RUNWAY 22R AND 31L. (.19) ON AUGUST 31, 1998, ABOUT 10:35 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME, A BOEING 727-200, N722DH, OPERATED BY DHL AS FLIGHT 1165, EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR SHORTLY AFTER MAKING AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT JFK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, JAMAICA, NEW YORK. THE AIRPLANE WAS ON A REGULARLY SCHEDULED FLIGHT, OPERATING UNDER 14 CFR PART 121, FROM NEW YORK TO PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE. SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF, ABOUT 600 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND, THE NUMBER 2 ENGINE FAILED. THE FLIGHTCREW DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND REQUESTED TO RETURN TO THE AIRPORT. THE FIRST OFFICER WAS THE FLYING PILOT. AS THE AIRPLANE SLOWED TO ABOUT 80 KNOTS, THE CAPTAIN TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR FAILED. THE AIRPLANE SLID TO A STOP ON THE RUNWAY. THE 3 FLIGHTCREW MEMBERS AND 2 JUMPSEAT RIDERS EXITED THE AIRPLANE AND WERE NOT INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DCA98MA084](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DCA98MA084), Aug 31, 1998: Boeing 727-200 (N722DH), Jamaica, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of the right main landing gear caused by fatigue cracking and stress corrosion cracking of the trunnion bearing support fitting.

## Other reports on N722DH (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19901205063009I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901205063009I), Dec 5, 1990: Boeing 727228 (N722DH), Birmingham, AL. When pilot backed aircraft from hold-short line the right gear left taxiway and sank into soft ground.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
