## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT WAS ON A PRACTICE FLIGHT AT F39 GCA. ON APPROACH TO RUNWAY, PILOT ENCOUNTERED A 90 DEGREE 12-15 KNOT CROSS-WIND. PILOT SLIGHTLY BOUNCED AIRCRAFT AND THEN OVER CORRECTED CROSSWIND FORCE. STOPPED ENGINE IMMEDIATELY AND GROUND LOOP AT ABOUT 20 M.P.H. PILOT SIDE LOADED THE AIRCRAFT AND FOLDED THE RIGHT GEAR. THE LOWER RIGHT WING STRUCK THE RUNWAY AND RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. NO OTHER APPARENT DAMAGE WAS NOTED. PILOT MOVED THE AIRCRAFT TO HANGAR WITH AID OF OTHER PILOTS AND DELAYED REPORTING ACCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW98LA414](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW98LA414), Aug 31, 1998: Pitts S-2B (N52TW), Sherman, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of the pilot in command to maintain directional control of the airplane during the landing flare. A factor was the gusty, crosswind condition.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
