## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-5)ON SEPTEMBER 09, 1998 AT OAKLAND INT'L A/P, AN INCIDENT INVOLVING A UNITED AIR LINES B-737-322 AND A TAESA AIRLINES B-737-300 RESULTED IN SUBSTANTIAL AIRFRAME DAMAGE TO THE TAESA AIRCRAFT. DAMAGE TO AIRCRAFT WAS CAUSED BY A MOVING BAGGAGE CART THAT WAS PUSHED BY THE JET BLAST OF THE TAXIING AND DEPARTING UNITED AIR LINES AIRPLANE. THE TAESA AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO BOTH LONGITUDINAL AND CIRCUMFERENTIAL STRINGER(S) AND AIRCRAFT SKINS. THE BAGGAGE CART WAS OWNED AND OPERATED BY TRANSAIR, A CONTRACTING COMPANEY PROVIDING GROUND SERVICES FOR TAESA AIRLINES. RESULTS OF THIS INVESTIGATION REVEALS THAT TRANSAIR'S GROUND CREW PERSONNEL HAD FAILED TO POSITION THE TOW BAR IN THE "UP AND LOCK" POSITION RENDERING THE BRAKING BAR BEHIND THE FRONT WHEEL UNUSEABLE. AS A RESULT OF THE TOW BAR LEFT IN THE "DOWN AND UNLOCK" POSTION, THE BAGGAGE CART WAS VIRTUALLY FREE MOVING OFFERING LITTLE RESISTANCE TO THE FORCE OF THE JET BLAST THUS PROPELLING THE CART INTO THE TAESA AIRCRAFT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
