(-23)ON SEPTEMBER 12, 1998, AT 10:15 MDT, GRUMMAN AMERICAN AA-1B, REGISTRATION NUMBER N6288L, REGISTERED TO AND OPERATED BY JOHN F. CRATER (PILOT), IMPACTED TERRAIN WHILE MANEUVERING 1 MILE WEST OF COLOADO SPRINGS EAST AIRPORT (CO50), ELLICOTT, COLORADO. THE COMMERCIAL PILOT AND HIS ONE PASSENGER WERE FATALLY INJURED. IT APPEARS THAT THIS FLIGHT WAS A FAMILIARIZATION FLIGHT FOR THE PASSENGER, PROMOTED BY THE EAA "YOUNG EAGLES", AND HAD DEPARTED MEADOW LAKE AIRPORT (OOV), PEYTON, CO, APPROXIMATELY TWENTY MINUTES EARLIER. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION INDICATE THAT POWER FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY FUEL EXHAUSTION. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT THE CRASH WAS DUE TO LOSS OF AIRCRAFT CONTROL RESULTING IN A STALL.
