## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACFT WAS COMING IN TO LAND WHEN IT STRUCK TREES AND CRASHED 100 YARDS EAST OF RWY 19.(.4) THE COMMERCIAL PILOT WAS FLYING FROM THE RIGHT SEAT, AND THE PASSENGER, WHO WAS ALSO A STUDENT PILOT, WAS IN THE LEFT SEAT. THE COMMERCIAL PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND, BUT WHEN HE FELT IT COULD NOT BE DONE SAFELY, HE DECIDED TO PERFORM A GO-AROUND. THE AIRPLANE DRIFTED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDED WITH TREES DURING THE GO-AROUND. WINDS WERE FROM THE RIGHT, ABOUT KNOTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC99LA014](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC99LA014), Oct 21, 1998: Piper PA-28R-201 (N31869), Mattituck, NY, destroyed. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain the airplane's directional control during a go-around.

## Other reports on N31869 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19791001051479I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19791001051479I), Oct 1, 1979: Piper PA28/ (N31869), Danville, VA. Pilot cleared from 9000 to 6000. Descended through assigned altitude.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
