## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-5)ON 10-27-98 AT APPROXIMATELY 4:00 PM MR. SMITH DEPARTED FORBES FIELD IN TOPEKA, KS, DESTINED FOR LIBERAL, KS. ON APPROACH TO LIBERAL THE PILOT SELECTED THE LANDING GEAR DOWN. THE GEAR DID NOT INDICATE DOWN AND LOCKED AND THE EMERGENCY LEVER INDICATED THE WHEELS WERE ABOUT HALF WAY DOWN. THE LANDING GEAR CIRCUIT BREAKER WAS NOTICED TO HAVE POPPED AND WOULD NOT RESET. THE PILOT THEN CONTACED THE LYDDON AERO CENTER FBO AND ADVISED OF HIS PROBLEM. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO MANUALLY LOWER THE GEAR BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. THE PILOT THEN ELECTED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING. WITH EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT STANDING BY THE PILOT MADE A GEAR UP LANDING ON THE EAST SIDE OF RUNWAY 17 IN THE GRASS JUST SOUTH OF THE INTERSECTION. THE PILOT WAS NOT INJURED AND THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED DAMAGE TO THE PROPELLER AND MINOR DAMAGE TO THE BELLY SKIN OF THE AIRCRAFT. LOCAL TIME WAS APPROXIMATELY 1914 HOURS. IT APPEARS THAT THE NOSE WHEEL SHIMMY DAMPER MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THE NOSE GEAR TO HANG UP ON THE ENGINE LOWER COWLING. LYDDON AREO CENTER IS EVALUATING THE MECHANICAL FAILURE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
