## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON NOVEMBER 22, 1998, DURING A PLEASURE FLIGHT AT 1410 CDT LOCAL TIME, A CESSNA 172, REGISTERED TO DEANNA ROBERTSON, PILOTED BY RUSSELL RICHARDSON, A PRIVATE PILOT, LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN AT FAYETTEVILLE, AR (FYV) RESULTING IN A HARD LANDING CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO DEPART THE RUNWAY AND STRIKE A RUNWAY MARKER CAUSING THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR TO COLLAPSE. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS EXISTED AND SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT RESULTED. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE UNINJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW99LA035](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW99LA035), Nov 22, 1998: Cessna 172P (N54959), Fayetteville, AR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for the wind conditions resulting in a loss of directional control. A factor was the shifting and gusty wind conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
