## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE FLIGHT WAS THE STUDENT PILOT'S FIRST FLIGHT IN OVER 3 1/2 YEARS; HIS TOTAL TIME WAS 12.5 HOURS. THE AIRPLANE DEPARTED AROUND 1300, AND WHEN IT DID NOT RETURN BY 1500, THE OPERATOR REPORTED IT MISSING. AN EMERGENCY LOCATOR TRANSMITTER (ELT) SIGNAL WAS DETECTED ABOUT 1900, AND THE WRECKAGE WAS DISCOVERED ABOUT 2040. A STRONG SMELL OF FUEL WAS DETECTED ON SCENE. ALL OF THE AIRPLANE WAS FOUND AT THE ACCIDENT SITE. THE FLAPS WERE SET AT 40 DEGREES OF EXTENSION AND CONTROL CONTINUITY WAS ESTABLISHED FOR ALL FLIGHT CONTROLS. AN INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE AND ASSOCIATED PARTS DID NOT REVEAL ANY DISCREPANCIES WHICH WOULD HAVE PRECLUDED NORMAL OPERATION. GROUND SCARS AND WRECKAGE SIGNATURES SHOWED A NEAR VERTICAL IMPACT WITH ROTATION TO THE RIGHT. (-23) ON DECEMBER 24, 1998, AT APPROXIMATELY 1430 HOURS, CESSNA 150L, N11829, WAS DESTROYED WHEN IT IMPACTED THE GROUND NEAR YUCAIPA, CALIFORNIA. BOTH THE INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT PILOT SUSTAINED FATAL INJURIES. THE TRAINING FLIGHT HAD DEPARTED REDLANDS AIRPORT AT APPROXIMATELY 1300 HOURS, DECEMBER 24, 1998.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
