## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AT APPROXIMATELY 1600 ON 01/29/99, DEAN WAS CONDUCTING DUAL INSTRUCTION WITH A COMMERCIAL STUDENT WHEN THE ELEVATOR CONTROL CABLE BROKE CAUSING LOSS OF PITCH CONTROL. HE DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WITH IXD CONTROL TOWER, RETURNED USING TRIL AND POWER FOR PITCH CONTROL, AND MADE A SUCCESSFUL LANDING. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE BATTERY HAD EXITED ITS RETAINING BOX, THE BATTERY TERMINALS SHORTED AGAINST THE ELEVATOR CONTROL CABLE, BURNING IT IN TWO CAUSING LOSS OF THE ELEVATOR CONTROL. INCIDENT # CE99IGA0032 IS CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
