## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-5)ON FEBRUARY 27, 1999, A CESSNA 182R, S/N 1820051, N7301W, OPERATED BY MR. JOHN KEARNEY WAS ON A VISUAL APPROACH TO ROANOKE REGIONAL AIRPORT, VIRGINIA AT 1230 LOCAL TIME. MR. KEARNEY EXTENDED THE LANDING GEAR BUT FAILED TO GET A GEAR DOWN (SAFE) INDICATION. HE NOTIFIED THE TOWER AND DID THREE (3) FLY-BYS. THE TOWER STATED THE GEAR, ALL THREE (3), APPEARED TO BE DOWN BUT COULD NOT CONFIRM A LOCKED STATUS. MR. KEARNEY MADE A FINAL LANDING. UPON EXITING THE RUNWAY TO TAXI, THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED RESULTING IN MINOR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT (PROPELLER AND NOSE GEAR DOORS). DURING INVESTIGATION, IT WAS DISCOVERED THE NOSE GEAR ACUATOR, CESSNA P/N 1280514-9, DID NOT FULLY RETRACT ALLOWING ENGAGEMENT OF THE ACUATOR DOWN LOCK HOOKS. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT WAS DETERMINED THE LEFT SIDE LOCK PIN, AS PART OF THE ACUATOR, HAD FRACTURED AND JAMMED THE NOSE ACUATOR ROD AT THE LOCK HOOK ATTACHEMENT PREVENTING AN ADDITION 1/2 INCH OF TRAVEL TO FULLY ENGAGE THE DOWN LOCKS. A MALFUNCITION DEFECT REPORT WAS SUBMITTED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
