## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-5) AFTER DEPARTURE AT @29.00 A LOUD BANG WAS EXPERIENCED FOLLOW BY A #1 ENGINE FAILURE. THE CAPTAIN DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND RETURNED SAFETY TO FLL WITH NO AIRCRAFT DAMAGE OR INJURIES. MAINTENANCE AT FLL FOLLOW THE RIGHT ENGINE TURBINE SEIZED. THE ENGINE WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED, ALSO ALL FOLLOW ON MAINTENANCE AND TRIM PAD RUNS. (FROM .19) ON MARCH 16, 1999, ABOUT 1948 EASTERN STANDARD TIME, A MCDONNELL DOUGLAS DC-9-82 (MD-82), N77827, OPERATED BY CONTINENTAL AIRLINES INC., AS FLIGHT 1036, LOST POWER IN THE NO. 1 ENGINE AND RETURNED TO FORT LAUDERDALE/HOLLYWOOD AIRPORT (FLL), FLORIDA. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME, AND AN IFR FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED FOR THE 14 CFR PART 121 SCHEDULED DOMESTIC FLIGHT. THE AIRPLANE WAS NOT DAMAGED. THE FLIGHTCREW OF 2, 3 CABIN ATTENDANTS, AND 141 PASSENGERS REPORTED NO INJURIES. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED FROM FORT LAUDERDALE AT 1904, AND WAS ENROUTE TO NEWARK, NEW JERSEY. AT A LOCATION ABOUT 50 MILES NORTH OF FREEPORT, BAHAMAS, THE FLIGHT WAS AT FLIGHT LEVEL 280 (28,000 FEET) AND HAD JUST BEEN CLEARED TO FLIGHT LEVEL 290, WHEN THE CREW HEARD A "BOOM" AND THE AIRPLANE STARTED TO SHUTTER. THE FLIGHTCREW NOTED THAT THE NO. 1 ENGINE HAD DETERIORATED, THEY CALLED AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL, DECLARED AN EMERGENCY, SHUT DOWN THE NO. 1 ENGINE, DESCENDED TO FLIGHT LEVEL 150, AND ELECTED TO LAND AT FLL. THE FLIGHT LANDED AT FLL WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT, TAXIED TO THE GATE WHERE ALL THE PASSENGERS AND CREW DEPLANED. THE FLIGHTCREW TOLD THE FAA THAT THEY HAD NO FIRE WARNING, AND NO SMOKE IN THE CABIN, BUT HAD A TAILCONE MISSING LIGHT ILLUMINATE. PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION OF THE NO. 1 ENGINE REVEALED THAT THERE WAS A FAILURE IN THE LOW PRESSURE TURBINE. ALL METAL WAS CONTAINED, AND TURBINE PARTS WERE FOUND IN THE TAILCONE. IN ADDITION, DURING THE ENGINE FAILURE A PIECE OF METAL DID SOMETHING TO THE TAILCONE WARNING LIGHT SENSOR, CAUSING THE "MISSING TAILCONE" LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. THE TAILCONE WAS FOUND ATTACHED TO THE AIRPLANE AT THE GATE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
