## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N119SP DEPARTED MIC FOR COQ AFTER COMPLETION OF AN ANNUAL INSPECTION AND SERIES OF MAINTENANCE FLIGHTS. THE A/C RAN OUT OF FUEL ABOUT FIVE (5) MILES SOUTH OF THE COQ AIRPORT. AUTOROTATION WAS INITIATED FOLLOWED BY AN EMERGENCY LANDING. THE A/C EXPERIENCED SUBSTANTIAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE UPON GROUND CONTACT TO THE TAIL BOOM, TAIL ROTOR DRIVE SHAFT, AND MAIN TRANSMISSION DECK. THE PILOT OF THE AIRCRAFT, WHO WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT, WAS NOT INJURED. NO DAMAGE TO PROPERTY OCCURRED OTHER THAN TO THE HELICOPTER. IN CALCULATING HIS FUEL RESERVE, THE PILOT STATED HE FORGOT FLIGHT TIME SPENT PREVIOUSLY IN THE WEEK AT MINNEAPLOIS' ANOKA COUNTY AIRPORT (ANE). FAA DID NOT VISIT ACCIDENT SITE. BY THE TIME OF NOTIFICATION, THE A/C HAD ALREADY BEEN MOVED TO SCOTT'S HELICOPTER SERVICES, INC., LE SEUER, MN. (.19) ON APRIL 09, 1999, AT 2015 CENTRAL DAYLIGHT TIME, A BELL 206B, N119SP, PILOTED BY A COMMERCIAL PILOT, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DURING A FORCED LANDING FOLLOWING A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. NIGHT VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. THE POSITIONING FLIGHT WAS OPERATING UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF 14 CFR PART 91 AND WAS NOT ON A FLIGHT PLAN. THE PILOT REPORTED NO INJURIES. THE FLIGHT DEPARTED CRYSTAL AIRPORT, MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA AT 1905 AND WAS EN ROUTE TO CLOQUET CARLTON COUNTY AIRPORT, CLOQUET, MINNESOTA. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND, HE WAS 10 MILES FROM HIS DESTINATION AIRPORT WHEN HE RECEIVED A LOW FUEL PRESSURE WARNING. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE KNEW OF A FIELD THAT HE COULD LAND IN, FIVE MILES FROM HIS CURRENT POSITION, AND DECIDED TO MANEUVER THE HELICOPTER TO THAT LOCATION. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT WHILE OVER THE PREDETERMINED FIELD, AT APPROXIMATELY 300 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL, THE ENGINE LOST TOTAL POWER AND HE BEGAN AN AUTOROTATION TOWARDS THE FIELD. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE PERFORMED A RUN-ON LANDING, IN ORDER TO AVOID SOME OBSTACLES, AND CAME TO REST IN AN UP-RIGHT ATTITUDE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI99LA130](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI99LA130), Apr 10, 1999: Bell 206B (N119SP), Cloquet, MN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate fuel management which led to fuel exhaustion and subsequent loss of engine power. Related factors were the pole and dusk light conditions.
