## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON TUESDAY, MAY 4, 1999, A SAAB 340A, N35CQ, S/A 340A-035, OPERATED BY CHAUTAUQUA AIRLINES D/B/A USAIR EXPRESS LANDED ON RUNWAY 5, AT 2025 LOCAL AT THE BUFFALO NIAGARA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AFTER REPORTING A POSSIBLE FIRE AND SMOKE IN THE CARGO COMPARTMENT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED AND TAXIED TO THE RAMP WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE CARGO FIRE BOTTLE WAS DISCHARGED IN FLIGHT AND SLIGHTLY THEREAFTER THE LIGHT EXTINGUISHED. NO SIGN OF SMOKE OR FIRE WERE FOUND UPON INSPECTION OF THE CARGO COMPARTMENT. MAINTENANCE REPLACED BOTH SMOKE DETECTORS AND THE FIRE BOTTLE. A FUNCTION CHECK OF THE SYSTEM WAS MADE WITH NO DISCREPANCIES FOUND. THE AIRCRAFT WAS THEN RETURNED TO SERVICE. THIS INCIDENT IS CONSIDERED CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
