## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 21, 1999, APPROXIMATELY 1300 MOUNTAIN DAYLIGHT TIME, A RICH RV3-A HOMEBUILT EXPERIMENTAL AIRPLANE, N4461V, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED DURING A FORCED LANDING FOLLOWING A LOSS OF POWER NEAR BOUNTIFUL, UTAH. THE PRIVATE PILOT, THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRPLANE, WAS NOT INJURED. THE AIRPLANE WAS OWNED/OPERATED BY THE PILOT UNDER TITLE 14 CFR PART 91. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED FOR THE LOCAL ROUND-ROBIN FLIGHT WHICH ORIGINATED APPROXIMATELY 90 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. NO FLIGHT PLAN HAD BEEN FILED. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, AS HE APPROACHED HIS FINAL DESTINATION HE EXPERIENCED A POWER FAILURE AND PERFORMED A FORCED LANDING TO A FIELD. DURING THE LANDING ROLL, THE MAIN LANDING GEAR IMPACTED A DITCH, WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY SEPARATED THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR. POSTACCIDENT EXAMINATION OF THE LEFT WING REVEALED THAT THE LEFT MAIN REAR STRUT WAS BENT.(-23)^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS PIC OF A RV-3, N4461V, ON A VFR FLIGHT FROM BTF TO BMC TO OGD AND BACK TO BTF. THE AIRPLANE LOST POWER AND LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE FUEL SHOWED NO FUEL. IN ADDITION, THERE WAS NO FUEL SMELL IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA OF THE AIRPLANE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN99LA082](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN99LA082), May 21, 1999: Rich RV3-A (N4461V), Bountiful, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate preflight planning, and the subsequent fuel exhaustion during the flight. Factor was the airplane's inaccurate fuel gauge.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
