(-23) PILOT WAS LANDING A/C TO RUNWAY 10L AT JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT (SNA) WHEN THE A/C GROUND LOOPED. THE RIGHT WING TIP AND THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR WERE DAMAGED. THE DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING TIP ALSO BENT THE MAIN SPAR RESULTING IN THE CLASSIFICATION TO ACCIDENT. THE ACCIDENT CAME TO REST IN THE GRASS BETWEEN RUNWAY 19L AND TAXIWAY C.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX99LA196](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX99LA196), May 22, 1999: Maule M-5-210C (N51641), Santa Ana, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control and his excessive use of the rudder to regain runway alignment.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
