## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JUNE 19, 1999 AT APPROXIMATELY 1203 EST N739ZU, A CESSNA 172 PILOTED BY TRENT BENNETT PRIVATE PILOT CERTIFICATE NO. 310767965, LOST ENGINE POWER WHILE IN CRUISE FLIGHT AT AN ALTITUDE OF 2500 MSL (ABOUT 1700 AGL). AFTER A VAIN ATTEMPT TO RESTART THE ENGINE THE PILOT TURNED HIS CONCENTRATION TO PERFORMING AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A HAY FIELD. THE EMERGENCY LANDING WAS CONDUCTED SUCCESSFULLY WITHOUT INJURY TO THE PILOT AND HIS PASSENGER AND WITHOUT DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. A SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAGT FUEL TANKS WERE EMPTY. ABOUT TEN GALLONS OF FUEL WAS ADDED TO THE AIRCRAFT AND THE MACHINE WAS FLOWN OUT OF THE HAY FIELD TO MONROE COUNTY AIRPORT, BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA WHERE IT WAS TOPPED OFF WITH AN ADDITIONAL 33 GALLONS OF FUEL. THE HOBBS METER INDICATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT HAD FLOWN 4.3 HOURS. THE TYPE DATA CERTIFICATE INDICATES THAT THE FUEL CAPACITY IS 39 GALLONS TOTAL AND 36 GALLONS USUABLE. OPTIMALLY, AT 8 GPH THE AIRCRAFT WILL BLY 4.5 HOURS. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ THIS INCIDENT IS CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
