## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 6/24/99 CONTINENTAL EXPRESS FLIGHT 3180, AN EMB-120, N40717, TO SYRACUSE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, PILOT NOTICED THE SMELL OF CIGARETTE SMOKE COMING THROUGH THE VENT IN THE COCKPIT (VENT APPARENTLY IS CONNECTED TO THE LAV.) PILOT REQUESTED THAT FLIGHT ATTENDANT, AMANDA ROEDLER, INVESTIGATE. FLIGHT FOUND A CIGARETTE BUTT ON THE FLOOR UNDER KLEENEX AND KLEENEX AROUND THE SMOKE DETECTOR. ONE PASSENGER COMMENTED THAT ANOTHER PASSENGER SMELLED OF SMOKE AFTER EXITING THE BATHROOM. THE PASSENGER, HENRY JACKSON, WAS CONFRONTED BUT DENIED EVERYTHING. THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT THEN COMPLETED AN INFLIGHT SECURITY DISTURBANCE FORM AND GAVE IT TO MR. JACKSON. THE PILOT CONTACTED SYR TOWER AND REQUESTED THAT POLICE/SECURITY BE CONTACTED. MR. JACKSON WAS DETAINED HOWEVER HE WAS NOT ARRESTED. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT DID NOT MAKE A STATEMENT AND, THEREFORE, THE POLICE WERE UNAWARE THAT THE SMOKE DETECTOR WAS TAMPERED WITH. AIRCRAFT WAS NOT DAMAGED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
