(.19)ON JULY 7, 1999, ABOUT 1500 PACIFIC DAYLIGHT TIME, A PIPER PA-22, N4707C, REGISTERED TO AND OPERATED BY THE PILOT, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED DURING AN OFF AIRPORT FORCED LANDING FOLLOWING A SUDDEN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY THREE MILES WEST OF COTTAGE GROVE AIRPORT, COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON. THE PRIVATE PILOT, THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRCRAFT, WAS NOT INJURED. NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED AND VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED FOR THE 14 CFR PART 91 PERSONAL/PLEASURE FLIGHT. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED FROM GASQUET AIRPORT, GASQUET, CALIFORNIA APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR AND 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. THE PILOT STATED THAT DURING THE LANDING ROLL-OUT THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A LARGE ROCK AND NOSED OVER, CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT'S WINGS AND FUSELAGE. (-23) A/C EXPERIENCED TOTAL ENGINE SHUT DOWN THREE MILES WEST OF COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON, AT 3500 FEET. PILOT TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO RESTART ENGINE BY SELECTING A DIFFERENT TANK. NEITHER TANK HAD FUEL. A/C LANDED IN A FIELD AND STRUCK A ROCK WITH THE NOSE LANDING GEAR. THE GEAR PARTIALLY COLLAPSED AND A/C FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA99LA109](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA99LA109), Jul 7, 1999: Piper PA-22 (N4707C), Cottage Grove, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate management of fuel which led to fuel starvation.. A related factor was the unsuitable terrain.

## Other reports on N4707C (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19790709014599A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19790709014599A), Jul 9, 1979: Piper PA22 (N4707C), El Dorado, KS, Substantial damage. Pilot took off downwind. He used the procedure in owners handbook which conflicts with approved flight manuel.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
